Research in the Hyster group is focused on the development of new-to-nature photoenzymes to produce value-added products. Natural photoenzymes and synthetic photocatalysis serve as inspiration for identifying promising protein scaffolds and reactivity patterns. Mechanistic studies are conducted in collaboration to elucidate fundamental principles that can be applied to identifying new reactions and catalysts. The group is also interested in identifying photo-compatible enzymes that can be used with synthetic photocatalysts to develop chemoenzymatic cascades.
